Shaista Patel, UC San Diego

Assistant Professor of Critical Muslim Studies,
Ethnic Studies
She/Her/Hers

Shaista Aziz Patel identifies as a caste-oppressed Shi’i Muslim Pakistani scholar. Patel works as an Assistant Professor of Critical Muslim Studies in the Department of Ethnic Studies at UCSD. She is also an affiliate of the Critical Gender Studies program. Patel received her Ph.D. in November 2018 in Social Justice Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. Her scholarly and all other political investments are in several questions that draw upon theories in Indigenous (to North America and South Asia), Black, Dalit, anti-caste, Muslim, and transnational feminist studies. Her current book project, provisionally titled Buffalo Archives, engages with questions of animal-human relationalities at the intersections of contemporary and historical manifestations of caste, indigeneity, and race within South Asia and North America (US/Canada). Patel’s book also continues to build on her scholarship to date by examining questions of the complicity of people of color at the confluences of multiple and complex identarian formations. Her work has been published in journals like Cultural Studies, Theory & Event, Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy, and Feral Feminisms among others.

Distinguished Professor, History She/Her/Hers I am a historian of late imperial and modern China and the Chinese maritime. My current project, on maritime China, explores the following: a) Chinese constructions of the maritime as domains of sovereignty and territorialization; b)Chinese diaspora and the cultural constructions of de-territorialized Chineseness; c) the transformation of Taiwan as a site where the diverging trends and the geo-strategic dynamics intersect. I am interested in related issues both of internal laws and national constructions. Email: sha@berkeley.edu Website: https://history.berkeley.edu/wen-hsin-yeh LinkedIn:
